A Powerful, Resonant Voice is The Result, not the Process...

When we hear strong, resonant voices, it's natural to want the same results for ourselves. But here’s the key: to achieve a full, rich sound, the process must feel gentle and free, not forceful.

Our instinct when trying to project is often to yell — but yelling is not musical, nor is it sustainable. If we rely on shouting as part of our singing process, it leads to fatigue and a lack of professional quality.

We need to develop an open voice, and then the power will come natural. Here are some suggestions to point you in the right direction.

  • A gentle, easy flow of air through the vocal folds

  • Healthy adduction (closure) of the folds to create the right subglottic pressure

  • Low diaphragm support, sitting on the breath with ease

  • Sing "as if" you are inhaling, rising soft palate, lowering larynx, relaxed tongue. Mapping this sensation from breathing to singing.

It feels counterintuitive because when we sing, the body often wants to collapse inward. But true resonance requires maintaining internal space. We need to trick the muscles we are inhaling when we are singing.

If you build your voice with patience, focusing on freedom and space rather than volume, strength will come naturally over time. Always stay within the frame of solid technique.

Don’t sacrifice long-term vocal health for short term results — treat your voice with the same care you would at the gym.

A well-equipped powerful voice is not forced — it's grown.
