How Should We Analyse Vocal Dynamics in a Score? Is it just a Shift in Tone Colour, or a Literal Decibel Change?

Vocal dynamics are often interpreted as literal changes in volume. But is that always the most musical or expressive approach?

Not necessarily.

We might instead consider whether dynamic markings reflect a shift in tone colour. The answer is yes — but it’s not just about colour either.

Here’s a more nuanced way to think about it:

Use the text — and the emotional intent behind the text — as your guide. When the expression is honest and connected to the words, a shift in tone colour often occurs naturally. This colour change then becomes the bridge to a literal change in volume.

In other words, let the expressive shift in colour lead you toward the dynamic change — not the other way around.
