When most singers think of the “A” vowel, they often gravitate toward the dark, rounded sound of “A” as in claw (/ɔː/). Here’s the reality with most singers I’ve worked with - often the student ends up lacking clarity, resonance, and overtones.
The (/æ/) vowel as in “Cat” positions the tongue and soft palate in a way that naturally enhances more brightness and overtones in the voice. This slightly more activated tongue position (if the larynx isn’t lifted) brings brilliance and clarity to your tone. The true “Ah” vowel should carry mostly the same overtones.
So next time you’re working on your “Ah” vowels, remember: “A” as in cat might just be your secret to vocal resonance.
