The Power of Vocal Dynamics: Guidance to Developing Your Vocal Dynamics.

Guidance to Singing with Dynamics
Singing Technique: Vocal Dynamics

Whilst siniging, or immersed in someone's performance, have you ever felt your heart race during a dramatic crescendo, only to be calmed by a tender, soft note? The dynamics of the voice play a crucial role in creating this emotional journey. A seamless transition from powerful singing to heartfelt softness can truly captivate an audience.

At the heart of this artistry lies technique. When vocal dynamics are expressed (with honesty and emotion,) singers can reach the pinnacle of their performance. However, poor technique can hinder this expression. For example, soft singing may lead to breathiness, while loud singing can cause strain and vocal weight. Let's explore how we can guide you to developing vocal dynamics through technique.

As a vocal coach, my role is to help students maintain a consistent and resonant sound. This ensures that their voices remain free and vibrant, no matter the dynamics they wish to explore. Without proper technique, we risk either whispering or shouting, rather than expressing ourselves musically.

The key lies in marrying musicality with expression. If you’re eager to dive deeper into vocal dynamics, I invite you to reach out!

Here is an exercise you can explore with your voice.

Vocal Exercise 1: Three Shades of Singing

Sing the following exercise on an "A" vowel:

  • (p) Soft A 1-5-1

  • (mp) Moderately Soft A 1-5-1

  • (mf) Moderately Loud A 1-5-1

Practice singing 5 notes ascending and descending across the three different dynamics.

Reflect on the sensations you feel as you go through each dynamic:

- Is the sound being suppressed by the tongue in any version?

- Is the voice remaining of pure, good quality?

- Is there any strain in any of the versions?

Aim to make each transition as free as possible, with the primary goal of achieving these vocal dynamics through a healthy sound.
